Pre-cooked ham, what can I do with it?

A pre-cooked ham just means that the ham was cooked before it was put in the package and sold. It is safe to take it out of the package, slice, and eat. You do not need to cook this ham, but you can warm it if you prefer. You can bake this ham with a glaze too. Most pre-cooked hams are boneless so you can easily slice them for sandwiches, put in soup, make a chef’s salad with the ham, and many other uses. This ham is for people who do not have the time to cook a fresh ham.

Pre-cooked ham can come in packages with the ham already sliced. You can also purchase this type of ham sliced from the deli in your local grocery store. The packaged ham may read “Honey Baked Ham,” or something on that order. You can purchase the deli ham as Honey Ham, Cajun Ham, Smoked Ham, and several others. In the deli, you can have the ham sliced as thick or thin as you prefer. You can even ask for a chunk so you can dice it and add it to your dish.

Pre-cooked hams can come in a variety of sizes. If you would purchase a 5-pound ham, you could slice, or dice it so you can freeze it for later meals. If you freeze ham, date it so you can use it within 2 months of freezing the ham. In the meat department, you can find whole boneless and half-boneless pre-cooked hams. Have the butcher slice the ham into ham slices. These ham slices are great to eat with eggs and fried potatoes for breakfast or dinner. There is nothing wrong with eating ham for breakfast or dinner.

Here is a delicious way to use pre-cooked ham.

Hawaiian Ham Steak

  • 2/3 cup canned, pineapple chunks, unsweetened
  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice, from chunk pineapple
  • 1 beef bouillon cube
  • 1 pre-cooked ham slice
  • 1 small green pepper, sliced ( can omit if you do not like green peppers)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • Heat pineapple juice in fry pan; add bouillon cube and stir to dissolve Add ham steak, green pepper (if desired), and pineapple Cover and simmer 8 minutes Turn ham steak once Remove ham steak to plate and keep warm Blend cornstarch into water, then gradually stir into juice in fry pan Add brown sugar Cook and stir until smoothly thickened mixture comes to a boil Simmer 2 minutes Pour over ham Serve on bed of rice

As you can see, pre-cooked ham can make a delicious Hawaiian dish. Pre-cooked ham is ideal to keep on hand for quick, easy meals or for a special dinner. Ham is not just for Sunday dinners, Christmas dinners, or for Thanksgiving any longer. With so many ways to prepare and use pre-cooked ham, it would be ideal to keep packages of sliced ham, ham steaks, and diced ham in the freezer for meals when you do not have to cook. If you have teenagers, they can grab a pack out of the freezer, thaw it in the microwave, and make sandwiches.
